City of Angels (November 2019)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

A cult classic and firm company favourite, Phoenix was delighted to re-stage City of Angels 19 long years after giving the show its North-East premiere.

Winner of the 1989 Tony Award for Best Musical, City of Angels is funny, biting, full of wit and, featuring a sensational jazz-infected score by Cy Coleman, it is one of the most unusual musicals you’ll ever see.

Based on the private eye movies of the 1940s, the story centres around the character of Stine, a fiction writer, who is trying to adapt one of his detective novels into a screenplay. The scenes move from the ‘real life’ Hollywood cast, in glorious technicolour, to the ‘on-screen’ characters created by Stine. In the style of a film noir, the ‘reel scenes’ are, of course, in black and white. As the suspense in the detective mystery builds, at the same time, the problems in Stine’s personal life escalate, bringing the show to an astonishing finale.

...Phoenix pulls it off with aplomb, with nimble storytelling, ingenious lighting and big screen backdrops...
