Into the Woods (May 1993)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

Once upon a time...

Welcome Into the Woods, to the mysterious magical world of giants, witches, mischief, spells, good and evil. This grown-up fairy tale brings together Cinderella, bold Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel (to name but a few). The story's catalysts are a Baker and his Wife, who are unable to have children as a result of a Witch's spell. As they roam the woods in an attempt to have the curse reversed, their quest has a ripple effect on the well-known tales of all the other characters.

These cleverly interweaving familiar stories flow through a light-hearted first act, but take us on a darker, more sobering adventure in the second. After all, what really does happen after "happily ever after"?

Into the Woods is certainly one of Stephen Sondheim's most celebrated musicals, featuring some of his cleverest and enchanting songs. Prepare then for much more than a fairy tale. So, join us for our journey Into the Woods.
