A Little Night Music (March 2013)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

The scene is set in Sweden, at the turn of the 20th century.

Middle-aged Fredrik Egerman, a successful lawyer, brings his 18-year old bride, Anne, to a play starring his former mistress, Desirée Armfeldt. Soon, Fredrik and Desirée resume their romance, incurring the wrath of her current lover, the pompous and utterly unbearable Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm.

The situation culminates in a weekend at the country estate of Desirées mother, the formidable Madame Armfeldt. With Fredrik, Anne, Desirée, and Count Carl-Magnus in attendance, as well as Fredrik’s son, Henrik (who is hopelessly in love with Anne), Desirée’s illegitimate daughter, Fredrika, the Count’s manic-depressive wife, Charlotte, and the Egerman’s lusty maid, Petra, the weekend appears to be doomed. However, under the summer night, things are, miraculously, set to right.

The romantic and achingly beautiful A Little Night Music boasts one of Stephen Sondheim’s most soaring and gorgeous scores and deals with the universal subject of love, in all its wondrous, humorous and ironic permutations.

...the costumes were magnificent...
