Oliver! (Nov 1994)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

As musicals go, Oliver! is quite extraordinary. A milestone in British musical theatre, the original 1960 stage production ran for a staggering 2,618 performances and remains a firm hit to this day.

The harmonic plight of Master Twist brings us to Dickensian London where Oliver comes upon a host of colourful characters, including the irrepressible Artful Dodger, the miserly Fagin and his gang, the villainous Bill Sykes and Nancy, who tries to help Oliver escape their clutches. With hit song after hit song, such as 'Boy for Sale', 'Where Is Love?', 'Consider Yourself', 'Oom-Pah-Pah' and 'As Long As He Needs Me', Lionel Bart's score is truly glorious.

In this lyrical tale about the boy who asked for more, Phoenix Theatre will conjure up a magical theatrical experience which will delight and enthral the entire family.

...it was obvious from the opening scene that we were going to see something very special...
