Sweeney Todd (Nov 1995)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

A tale capable of curdling an audience's blood, Sweeney Todd is one of Stephen Sondheim's most celebrated musicals.

Sweeney has just escaped from the Penal Colonies, having been convicted for a crime he did not commit. The former barber has only one desire - cold revenge against the corrupt judge who framed him, ruined his wife and stole his daughter to raise as his own. Teaming with the dazzlingly demented Mrs Lovett, a struggling baker of meat pies, the "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" cooks up a macabre revenge scheme that fulfils both their needs.

Black comedy, tragedy, romance and madness intersect brilliantly in this musical masterwork. Perhaps the ultimate musical, Sondheim's show is perfectly constructed, with ravishing music and passion beyond all measure.

...director Clare Murray has crafted a thrilling musical that is majestic in its breadth and uniquely beautiful...
