Sweeney Todd (March 2010)

His Majesty's Theatre

Sweeney Todd has just escaped from the Penal Colonies, having been convicted for a crime he did not commit. The former barber has only one thing on his mind - cold revenge against the corrupt judge who framed him, ruined his wife and stole his daughter to raise as his own. Teaming up with the dazzlingly demented Mrs Lovett, a struggling baker of meat pies, the "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" cooks up a macabre revenge scheme that fulfils both their needs!

Black comedy, tragedy, romance and madness intersect brilliantly in this musical masterwork by Stephen Sondheim. Perhaps the ultimate musical, this show is perfectly constructed, with ravishing music and passion beyond all measure.

...fifteen years since they first performed the show, Phoenix brings it to HMT in a dark and foreboding retelling which raises the goosebumps and the heart rate in equal measure...
