Annie (June 2010)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

For their 10th anniversary, Phoenix Youth Theatre presents their version of the heart-warming family musical that started Phoenix Theatre back in 1991.

Annie, a gritty, red-headed orphan, decides to run away from the New York orphanage, run by the intolerable Miss Hannigan, who loves her alcohol-filled hip flask rather more than the orphans in her care.

Luckily, Annie is present when Grace Farrell, private secretary to the billionaire Oliver Warbucks, arrives at the Orphanage to select an orphan to spend Christmas with Mr Warbucks. Warbucks and Annie hit it off immediately and, within a week, he decides to adopt her.  However, his plan is stopped short when Annie announces that she wants to find her own parents, who, she believes, are still alive.  Warbucks, despite his own feelings, sets about to realise her heart’s desire and offering a reward of $50,000, determines to find Annie’s parents.

Meanwhile, Miss Hannigan, her small-time criminal brother, Rooster, and his tarty girlfriend, Lily, cook up a plan to masquerade as Annie’s parents and claim the $50,000 reward.

Will Annie find her parents?  Will there be a happy ending?

...the production is a masterclass on how to stage this musical - the principals, chorus and band are all outstanding - the choreography was breathtaking...
