Fiddler on the Roof (June 2011)
Aberdeen Arts Centre
“A fiddler on the roof! Sounds crazy, no?” Well, not any more.
This classic musical, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, tells the story of Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions, while outside influences encroach upon their lives.
During the course of the show, Tevye must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters – each one’s choice of husband moving further away from the customs of her faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their villages.
With stunning music by Jerry Brock, moving lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a powerful, yet brilliantly humorous, script by Joseph Stein, this is an absolutely extraordinary piece of award-winning musical theatre.
