Oliver! (June 2008)

Aberdeen Arts Centre

As musicals go, Oliver! is quite extraordinary. A milestone in British musical theatre, the original stage production ran for a massive 2,618 performances and the film version collected no less than 6 Oscars, including the award for 'Best Picture' in 1968.  This production, in the hands of Phoenix Youth Theatre, promises to be something rather special!

The harmonic plight of Master Twist brings us to Dickensian London where Oliver comes upon a host of colourful characters, including the irrepressible Artful Dodger, the miserly Fagin and his gang, the villainous Bill Sykes and Nancy, who tries to help Oliver escape their clutches.  With hit song after hit song, such as 'Boy for Sale', 'Where Is Love?', 'Consider Yourself', 'Oom-Pah-Pah' and 'As Long As He Needs Me', Lionel Bart's score is truly glorious!

In this lyrical tale about the boy who asked for more, Phoenix Youth Theatre will conjure up a magical theatrical entertainment for the entire family.

...the comic and dramatic timing showcased by the group was staggering...
